Standardized ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) is one of the most scientifically validated herbs in existence. A large volume of research shows that GBE supports cerebral circulation by increasing blood flow to the brain, acts as a potent antioxidant, and inhibits platelet aggregation.*
Consumers have been educated to look for ginkgo extracts standardized to 27% ginkgo flavone glycosides and 7% terpene lactones. Yet results of TSI's laboratory testing reveal that many ginkgo materials are in fact adulterated with inexpensive rutin in order to achieve the desired '27' number. Why is this a problem? Adulteration causes disproportionate ratios of the flavonoids quercetin and kaempferol, yielding a substantively different extract than the one proven effective in clinical trials. Therefore, while adulterated extracts may meet their 27/7 label claim, their efficacy has to be questioned. TSI's Ginkgo 27/7/1 is 100% genuine ginkgo material that conforms to the quercetin/kaempferol flavonoid ratio defined by the Chinese Pharmacopoeia.
Another problem, identified by tests performed by consumerlabs.com, is that most finished ginkgo products do not provide adequate levels of the terpenoid bilobalide. This compound is thought to stimulate brain activity by interacting with GABA receptors.* Extracts deficient in bilobalide may not, therefore, be as efficacious as those containing it. TSI's Ginkgo 27/7/1 consistently delivers more than 7% total terpenoids, exceeding the recommendations of the German Commission E.
Finally, contamination issues are common among GBEs. Cheap extracts may contain undesirable levels of toxic allergens such as ginkgolic acid, or be tainted with solvent residues, pesticides, microbes and pathogens, and heavy metals. Uniquely processed to yield low ginkgolic acid (<1 ppm) levels, as required by the German Commission E, TSI's Ginkgo 27/7/1 is guaranteed the safest product possible. Ginkgo 27/7/1 is naturally processed according to cGMPs in TSI's own manufacturing facility and is routinely tested for microbes, pathogens and heavy metals in our own in-house analytical laboratories.
